Wandering down the stairs into the Hawksmoor, you might feel like you’re in a library of some Oxford college. Dark wood lines the walls and floors, and tables are high recycled chemistry lab tops, lit with old Bankers’ desk lamps. The recycling bit even extends to the tiles, which are from old tube stations.

BarChick felt like she should have been studying, so study the menu she did. Pete Jeary is the cocktail legend behind the menu here. He’s nailed it, with all sorts of original drinks on offer: hit the Anti-Fogmatics if you’re hung-over. Do NOT miss out on trying the Bloody Mary’s. Pete recently won Tabasco’s best Bloody Mary competition, so order some clams and he’ll use the clam/bacon broth in your drink. Now that’s original.

Hawksmoor probably serves the best steak in town, and you can order from the full restaurant menu in the bar. The shorter snack menu is perfect though. BarChick loved the Kimchi burger, and everyone has to try a triple cooked chip or 3. For lazy weekends, you won’t be disappointed either – you can catch their award-winning Sunday lunch every week between noon and 4.30pm. If all this leaves you needing a pick me up then order in the Square Mile “martinis” – guaranteed to get you ready for a class at Pineapple Dance studios which is just around the corner!
