BARCHICK SAYS

Is this a bar, or an opulent train carriage travelling express from Cape Town to Cairo? Either way this place is pretty damn cool. On arrival, a train conductor will usher you to your seat. The décor is all House of Hackney print pillows, Art Deco mirrors, olive green armchairs and decadent, glass lampshades, plus throw in a bit of jungle and you have yourself a hit. We were here for the drink and the long wooden, classic bar that has a fury of activity behind it which is exactly what we like to see.

Ex Powder Keg Diplomacy bartender Mikey Pendergast’s cocktail menu has plenty of head scratchingly exotic flourishes (including a colour changing, absinthe-coated scorpion garnish) for you to get stuck into. Half the team have come North of the river from PKD and have brought with them a love a gin and thrown in some rum. After dining on pot roasted rabbit and cider-braised pork belly be sure to ask for a tour of The Crypt, the underground flavour laboratory where many of the bar’s quirky ingredients (aka those scorpions) are whipped up.
