BARCHICK SAYS

Hotel bar luxury with a playful twist

Cosy, intimate and absolutely bursting with leatherbound books and luxe velvet furniture, Scarfes Bar at the Rosewood feels like a hybrid of your wealthy great-uncle Benedict's library of antique manuscripts and an old-school jazz club. But even with all the vintage vibes, this hotel bar is distinctly unstuffy. Cartoonist Gerald Scarfe gave his name and his own art collection to this place, and the caricatures of iconic faces add more than a hint of playfulness to the atmosphere - plus there's live music in the evenings, amping up the buzz.

Drinks-wise, it's all in the details. The Scarfes Bar crew are pros at their craft and are pretty adept at advising on beers, matching wines and preparing specially curated cocktails. The menus are always fun and creative, with an intelligent link back to Scarfe's caricatures. The current Off the Wall cocktail list even brings his art to life through the clever use of augmented reality - and the serves are top-notch, too.
