The Savoy Hotel has been a hospital, a prison and it’s the only place in the country you can drive on the right. Having been closed for over 2 years for a serious makeover, the deco legend is back and it means business.

Skip the lines at the American Bar and head downstairs to the newer Beaufort Bar – Champagne, cocktails and cabaret – it’s dripping in gold (£40ks worth to be precise) and glamour. Head bartender Chris Moore has delivered an expert team and some ridiculous drinks. If it’s bonus day, work your way through the huge list of Champagne by the glass. Or if you’re not feeling all the bubbles order manlier The Real McCoy with Woodford Reserve bourbon, King’s Ginger liqueur and chocolate bitters.

There is live entertainment every night, so it makes for a great date spot, particularly if you’re with someone who is easier on the eye than in conversation. The drinks are pricey, but getting gold flakes in your booze is never going to be cheap (unless it fell off the ceiling?). Food comes in the form of canapés served on mini pianos, we expected nothing less.
