The Dogstar

BARCHICK SAYS

The cornerstone of Brixton nightlife, this Brixton bar's rep certainly precedes it...

Step out of the tube station and ask any local , they all know the way. Inside it's all gothic grunge, distressed Victoriana, and with the venue playing the shabby cool host to its famously diverse range of DJs and live music you can always be sure of a different experience every time you darken its doorway. Set over 3 levels of the building (including a 200 capacity ballroom and VIP room available for hire) as well as the main bar.  The clientele covers every race and creed, all happy to mix it up, so no one feels out of place. Whilst the food service is basically non existent (only pizza) that is kind of appropriate for a place like this, anyway, eating’s cheating right?

Best to tap this place on a Friday or Saturday night when it ‘basically turns into a club’ till 4am.  The music ranges from foot tapping to irresponsibly good and those chairs and tables are cleared to make way for a dancefloor-come-rhythm pit.  Whilst some of the locals feel that the venue has lost its roots after the new ownership, those hankering for a true slice of urban, grungy cosmopolitan South London scene still seem to flock here and as such this place is still a must visit.  Plenty of different beers, but don’t neglect The Dogstar cocktail, it was the highlight of my night, although I couldn't tell you what is in it
