Varnishers Yard is that new(ish) development with a courtyard of bars and restaurants. El Camion’s the big Mexican, Pepito is all tapas and Sherry..but if you ask me this place is where you want to be; less crowded, quicker service, better drinks.

After years of practicing in some of London’s best bars, Italian Alex finally has one of his own; a modern day East Indian Punch House. Try anything once right? He’s got all sorts going on down here, so try and sit at the bar and pay attention. We test drove Shrubs, prohibition fruit vinegar drinks, which are those wax sealed concoctions behind the bar, the Improved Admiral Flip’s with a funky fizz to them, and tackled some barrel aged beverages, all interesting and delicious.

The food was a little funkier, with Sherry Washed Cheese and Sailors bruschetta, so if you’re not into the herrings perhaps just stick to the punches and you’ll get on just fine.
