Bao Bei

BARCHICK SAYS

If you find yourself around the up-and-coming fringe of Chinatown, hit up Bao Bei. Former bartender, Tannis Ling has re-created her childhood home, with old family photos and homely decor whilst offering a modern take on Chinese Cuisine.

But it’s not just the food and laid-back atmosphere that bring in the overly good-looking crowd; Bar Manager, Derek Granton and whiskey connoisseur Guy Stowell can whip up a seriously good cocktail. The cocktail list is simple, seasonal and heavily influenced by Asian cuisine with fresh ingredients like lemongrass, ginger and tangerine that will have your mouth watering. Cheung Po the Kid, with Flor de Caña 5yr Rum, Dubonnet, pomegranate molasses and house made Chinese plum bitters, was insane good. Their famous Pina Colada is a top seller too, in their words: “the best sissy drink you’ll ever have". If cocktails ain’t yo thang, the beer and wine list are equally outstanding.

Do it with a big group of friends sharing small plates, or fly solo at the bar and enjoy a serving of fresh dumplings with your drink, along with the rest of the regulars who come here on the weekly.
