In the nightlife heart of Chinatown, across the street from the infamous Phnom Penh (where you should go to ease your hangover tomorrow) is the unassuming entrance to Mamie Taylor's. You'll probably be greeted by one of the three partners of Boneta and Diamond fame - these guys know their sh*t and still greet you at the door with a smile. We like those kinda old school manners.
Everyone shares tables here, so there's lots of opportunity to get friendly with your neighbours creating a nicely upbeat, conversational atmosphere. With brick walls, candlelight and tons of taxidermy, it's unfussy chic.
The food is authentic heritage American, and although everyone gets the fried chicken, the smaller plates like roasted carrots and beets are pure genius. This place wouldn't be named after a classic cocktail, or even a popular actress from a traveling troupe if they couldn't deliver on the cocktail front. We like the Ducati Thief (Cynar, gin, grapefruit and sparkling wine), the Brown Derby (bourbon, fresh grapefruit juice and honey) and the Detroit Rock City (American whiskey, Lillet Blanc, amaro and bitters), and if we could keep going we would. They're surprising, fresh and satisfying.
This is our spot to kick off the night with dinner and drinks, before upping the ante.
