Here’s some info on Ruby Dee. Born in 1922, she was a bad a*s writer, poet, actor, and civil rights activist. We like to think she would have been a BarChick back in her day. And this new bar in Harlem, located in the building where she grew up, is dedicated to her. We love it already.
Stepping inside is like taking a little trip back to mid-century NYC, when Ruby would’ve been starring in some of her most notable roles. We’re talking retro heaven - print wallpaper, bulbous silver lampshades, and mismatched chairs. The walls have that orangey wood panelling that makes us think ’60’s clubhouse’ - all that’s missing are some beanbags and a lava lamp.
Chuck on your bell bottoms and prop yourself at the Formica bar. There are a handful of cocktails, but every single one if inventive enough to be intriguing. When we were there it was all about Carter Beats The Devil - tequila, orange liquor, lime, and Thai green curry soda. Okay, it sounds like something you’d drink as a dare - but trust us, it works. Also highly recommended are the Miso Horny (umami heaven), and the If Looks Could Kale. It’s got green juice in it so counts as some of our five a day, right? Soak up these with some of their tapas bar snacks. The Hot Honey Shrimp with Curried Mango went down way too well.
The owners want to create a space for like-minded artists, entrepreneurs, activists and business leaders - we felt totally at home, and we imagine it’d be hard not to, what with the welcome received. Ruby Dee was seriously cool - and her namesake bar follows suit.
