After a major facelift in 2010, Bar del Fico burst onto the Roman bar scene and hasn’t looked back. Hidden away just off touristy Piazza Navona, it has retained its local vibe, though don’t think that means it’s chilled out.

The interiors are styled on a provençal workers’ café, with paired down planks of wood around the bar and a vintage ‘Café – Tabac’ sign hanging above. But when we last swung by, there was a DJ spinning Tribe on vinyl, a hot bargirl mixing cocktails and the bar was rammed with hip, outward-looking types. In short, it was bangin’, and that’s why people flock here.

You won’t get much reprieve outside: on weekend nights the Piazza del Fico is packed out with at least two hundred people milling around. Casual conversations, people watching, perving, plastic glasses in hand, occasional motorini navigating through and kids water fighting near one of the drinking fountains – basically this is quintessential modern Roma.
