If BarChick were to design a street, it would probably look pretty close to Gemmayzeh. Behind almost every door is another cool place to party and those which aren't are selling light night snacks. Not a problem. However, in spite of all the choice, Charlie's has stood the test of time, remaining a Beiruiti institution. It’s small, cosy and charmingly old school, housed behind wooden shutters, with chalk boards introducing the daily specials. Propped on a stool at the bar with a bottle of Al Maaza, Lebanon's finest beer, it feels like the kind of place, (to steal from Cheers), 'where everybody knows your name.' With friendly waiting staff, an eclectic mix of Lebanon's young, hip, studenty crowd, and lots of classic rock, hit Charlie's for a more chilled out vibe. In a city where going out usually means dressing to impress, this great bar is refreshing and perfect until the wee hours of the morning.
