The Great Eastern

BARCHICK SAYS

At the bottom of the North Laines you’ll find The Great Eastern, an unassuming pub that looks like it’s been here for a few hundred years. It’s welcomingly cool in summer and cosy in winter, with a totally Dickensian feel once the mulled wine is brewing and the tables are candlelit.

What you wouldn’t expect though is that this pub has one of the best whisky lists in town with over 50 bourbons, many of the small, artisanal variety and a whole bunch of decently priced whisky-based cocktails. They’ve also got an awesome selection of beers including Iceland’s Einstock, American hispter favourite PBR (probably too light for most English palettes) and delicious Indian Pale Ales such as Goose Island. Two bottles of Estrella come in at £4 and a Bloody Mary is £4.25, which makes it our Sunday morning hangout of choice.

If you’re feeling peckish tuck into the interesting selection of hot and cold snacks. We like the savoury popcorn for some guilt-free munching. It’s super friendly and can get rammed. Easy to make some mates in here, and in the day time there is an unbelievable number of cute dogs in attendance.
