The Lido Bar

BARCHICK SAYS

If you’re built like David Hasselhoff (and you know it) and you’re looking for a place to take a date, then look no further. Alternatively if you want to check out your date’s bod without having to spend zillions on theatres, dinners and serenading accordion players beforehand, then whisk her down here for a quick swim before dinner. It’s hopelessly romantic, and she’ll have to get her kit off, nice.

Seediness aside, and swim or no swim, this is a very special little spot, and with all the window baskets, water and soothing lighting you are transported right out of Bristol and straight to the South of France. Sit inside at a little table by the window and watch the swimmers hard at work as you tuck into tapas and delicious vino. Sure, there are tables outside but unless you’re wearing waders and an anorak, it’s probably best to stay dry inside.

It feels like a cosy and very well stocked beach hut: diving signs decorate the walls, candles light the tables and blue tiles make up the floor. There’re a few spirits, and they can make up a good Bloody Mary or a Lido Royale, or just stick to the wine or beer. Order tapas, stay till closing and have a wonderful evening come summer or winter.
