The Mad Hatter’s tea party is a much covered source material when it comes to bars – all too often bordering on pastiche or empty whimsy. Peter’s House, despite being clearly indebted to that very same fairy-tale tea party has a bit more meat on its bones than you might expect, though.

With only a few tables in a bright room adorned with picture frames, wall murals and blackboards, there’s a comfortable, local vibe. During the day it’s open for lunch, light bites and coffees and it’s the type of place where freelancers congregate to make use of the free Wifi. With dinner offerings at night, it’s more of a laidback dining and drinks option than an all-out bar, but clever drinks promos – like the High Tea for Hooligans, which runs on Thursdays and Fridays between 4pm and 7pm serving Rooibos Sangria for R15 a pop – make for an interesting start to a night, plus it’s good for you, right?
