This bar is smack bang in the middle of the gritty Berlin neighbourhood of Kreuzberg; a paradise for bar-hoppers with hundreds of bars, restaurants and off licences. Madame Claude stands out for sheer strangeness. Located underground in a former brothel, its winding, confusing layout of small rooms is like walking into a David Lynch dream sequence. Trippy.
They even have a ‘Red Room’ from the show. Entry is free, but they ask for a donation - how much you give is entirely up to you. This is an upside-down bar; quite literally, the chairs and tables hang above you as you walk around on the ceiling. The frying pans hanging in the air behind the bar catch you off guard as you wait for one of their selection of German beers and wines.
Last time we went, a soundscape artist was slowly mixing whooshes, unrecognisable noises and ambient music into an audio experience for a darkened room full of engrossed hippies, freaks and geeks. But don’t let this put you off – the venue houses a huge variety of events including open mic nights, DJs and ping pong championships, and offers a quirky alternative to the rest of the Kreuzberg nightlife.
