BARCHICK SAYS

This is like your local pub, except it’s taken a trip through a Mexican wonderland, and has fallen into the hands of some cocktail obsessives. So basically, not much like your local pub at all, but probably what you wish it was.

‘Dogkeeper’ Carl has a big thing for mezcal. Unless you happen to run a mezcalaria in Oaxaca and have written a thesis in agave, he knows more than you. If you want to learn, take one of their Tres Hermanos flights, offering three tasters of this smoky fire from the south of Mexico. They also do flights of whiskies (Smoke and Kilts), genever (Dutch Courage) and bitters (The Great Danes).

Fittingly, the Norrebro bar has a Mexican look with a red, black and white colour scheme and curiosities from Carl’s spiritual homeland all over the place. He made most of it himself – the bar is slightly wonky and the handwash has been decanted into an old rum bottle. This isn’t your standard slick CPH cocktail bar style, which is refreshing considering the drinks are just as good. There is plenty of seating in nice booths, and standing room for when it gets crowded at the weekend.

We like their aperitivos list, matching your tipple to your nibble for civilized afternoon drinking: a Pastis with apple juice and bowl of olives is not going to ruin your appetite. They also have premixed cocktails in barrels behind the bar – a Negroni and a Mai Tai when we last visited. The cocktail list is awesome, and their drinks come with descriptions like this: ‘Think of a hit-man in the disguise of a Barbie.’ Yep, we’ll have two of those please.
