The Abbey Brewing Company is an old timer. Perched on 16th Street, it’s a bit far from the main drag, but hey, that’s one reason why it appeals to the regulars, who’ve been coming here since it swung open its nondescript doors – a neon sign above the building with the word ‘BAR’ - in 1995.

It’s well worth the stroll. Beer, unsurprisingly, rules supreme here. Crafted in collaboration between their brew master and a Florida brewery using locally sourced ingredients, we opted for a glass of their house Immaculate IPA, while our date gulped down their house Double: incredible, but dangerous. The beer list changes seasonally here, with 14 taps, a great bottle selection, cigars and an American whiskey list to make us salivate.

A stained glass window of their logo takes pride of place behind the bar, and with the dark wood paneling and long tables, the décor resembles a European beer hall in the tropics. Just watch out for that cheekily high percentage before hitting the surf.
