This Must Be The Place

BARCHICK SAYS

There's a fair few ghosts of bars past at this address, but BarChick is putting money on the latest reincarnation breaking the curse and sticking it out. The baby of two Australian Diageo Reserve World Class winners Luke Ashton and Charlie Ainsbury, this bar has got all the makings of a classic seaside shanty made for enjoying the duo's Spritzer-focussed menu.

The name is a nod to the Talking Heads song but this ain't no punky funk joint. It's more beachside cafe vibe here with its Scandi clean lines than Carnivale so if you are the type to take your shirt off after a few, do so at your peril. Given the world class pedigree of its owners, expect top notch cocktails and some inventive twists on on the humble aperitif that will leave you feeling chilled and wanting more - BarChick swilled her way through the Gloss (strawberry, Ketel One citroen, watermelon macerated riesling and rosewater) and the aptly named champagne lookalike Emerald City (Lime Bianco vermouth, Tanqueray, pineapple and cardamom). The munching menu isn't fancy but isn't your conventional kind either - tinned razor clams anyone? If you're after something more substantial there's plenty of dining options all along Oxford St, making this the perfect pre or post dinner stop.
