If you’ve long wished Miami wasn’t all about the sleazy, glam nightclubs, and instead about the laidback Caribbean vibes, then The Broken Shaker is exactly what you’ve been looking for. A bit away from the South Beach neon nonsense, in a quieter neighbourhood along Indian Creek Drive, this historic building is now a small boutique hostel The Freehand Miami, home to one of our favourite Miami bars. Head out to the pool – surrounded by vintage floral sofas, a ping pong table and tiki bar – and in the corner is The Broken Shaker, once a pop-up and now a permanent fixture.

Decked out in homage to the great bars of Hemmingway’s time, the tatted bartenders make custom made cocktails using the ultra-fresh house ingredients including herbs and spices from the garden. If you want to keep it simple, start working your way through their nice list of bourbon and whisky. Oh and they occasionally get the chainsaw out to cut your ice, which is hot.
